ONE GLOBE POLICY
Finns consume natural resources as though we had four globes. Climate crisis, biodiversity loss and water pollution are all signals of our unsustainable lifestyle. Helsinki must stop the use of fossil fuels – wind power plants would produce clean energy and make the front of the city more beautiful.
ROOM FOR PEOPLE – NOT CARS
Public transportation is the urban way to go; cars are in the way. The quality of public transportation must be improved and ticket prices should be cut. Cycling in the city should be made easier. Helsinki must introduce congestion charges and build cross traffic on rails.
IN HELSINKI THERE’S ROOM FOR EVERYONE
Diversity of people is a part of Helsinki: there is room for a wide range of cultures, ethnic groups, genders and sexual orientations. The same fundamental rights belong to all of us. Good basic services must be available to every citizen. The municipal tax can be raised so that public services do not have to be cut.
In a city, there should be space for independent culture and free activities. Helsinki is not just for consumers. There must be legal premises for street art, and free notice boards are needed on every block.
EVERYBODY’S VOICES MUST BE HEARD
Decision-making should be brought nearer to the citizens and made more transparent. When the municipalities of the capital region are merged, the inhabitants must be provided with an opportunity to affect their neighborhood issues in neighborhood councils, for instance. The youth must be given real power instead of mere discussion clubs.
COSY, GREEN CITY
A cosy city needs both nearby green spaces and building compactly. Forest protection is important not only from people’s well-being’s but also from the biodiversity’s point of view. More affordable housing should be built in Helsinki. Land should be reserved for student housing in the new areas of the city. Homelessness must be eliminated by building enough supportive housing.
I can act by:
Using public transportation, eating vegetarian food, reducing my consumption, recycling, switching to green energy, favoring organic and fair trade goods, saving energy, cycling, questioning the common practice, voicing my opinion, lobbying the decision makers, voting for the Greens, and by joining the Young Greens of Helsinki.
Young Greens of Helsinki is a Green youth organization founded in the spring of 2003. We want democracy, freedom, social justice and a clean environment. Therefore, we practice loud and visible politics both on the streets and in the cabinets.
Join us – for a better Helsinki and a better world!
